What is Change Management?

Change management is the structured approach to transitioning individuals, teams, and organisations from a current state to a desired future state. Whether implementing new technologies, restructuring teams, or refining processes, managing change effectively minimises disruption and enhances business outcomes.

Key Change Management Frameworks and Tools

Several established models help guide organisations through change.

  • Lewin’s Change Model: A three-stage process (Unfreeze, Change, Refreeze) that simplifies transitions.

  • Kotter’s 8-Step Model: Focuses on leadership-driven change, ensuring long-term success.

  • McKinsey 7S Framework: Aligns organisational elements—strategy, structure, systems, shared values, skills, staff, and style—to drive change effectively.

  • ADKAR Model: A goal-oriented framework that focuses on individual change through Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, and Reinforcement.

  • SCARF Model: A neuroscience-based approach to managing change that considers five key social drivers—Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness—to reduce resistance and improve engagement.

In addition, tools like Change Impact Assessments and Change Strategy Planning help leaders understand potential risks and ensure a smooth transition.

Applying Change Management in Your Organisation

To implement change successfully:

  • Align initiatives with project phases.

  • Engage and support employees through training and communication.

  • Monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed.

By using these frameworks and tools, you can manage change proactively, cultivating a culture of adaptability and resilience.
